Techtel Powers RMIT’s Next-Gen Media Storage with Harmonic
/Melbourne, Australia – 26 February 2025 – Techtel, a leading broadcast technology systems integrator has, in collaboration with Harmonic, successfully delivered and installed a new Harmonic MediaGrid® shared real-time storage system for RMIT University. The next generation solution enriches the learning experience offered by the institution by leveraging a modern and scalable storage solution.
As one of Australia’s largest tertiary institutions and a global leader in media and communications qualifications, RMIT University required a high-performance storage system to support students in media production courses. The newly deployed Harmonic MediaGrid provides a reliable, high-density, and cost-effective media storage solution that enables seamless collaboration, content management, and production workflows.
Techtel worked closely with RMIT University and its long-standing partner Harmonic to facilitate the procurement, organisation, and installation of the new system, ensuring an efficient and timely deployment. The upgraded infrastructure offers enhanced scalability, superior performance, and robust data protection, enabling students and faculty to access, edit, and manage media content with greater efficiency.
The installation ensures uninterrupted access to media resources. The Harmonic MediaGrid storage system supports a range of digital media applications, including real-time editing, ingest, playout, and archiving. With features such as linear scaling, built-in redundancy, and seamless integration with industry-standard nonlinear editing software, the system provides a future-proof solution for RMIT’s evolving needs.
Dr David Beesley, Technical Services & Facilities Manager, School of Media and Communication, RMIT University, said: "This marks our third iteration of the Harmonic MediaGrid, all procured through Techtel, with our first installation in 2011 being a world-first at our Noble Park data centre. Over the years, the system has proven itself to be rock solid, supporting thousands of students in their media production studies. Our longstanding relationship with Harmonic and Techtel is a testament to the reliability and performance of this solution."
“This upgrade ensures that the next generation of media professionals at RMIT University gain hands-on industry experience with this technology,” said Peter Stevens, Senior Product Manager at Techtel. “By deploying Harmonic’s proven storage system, we’ve ensured that students can work with reliable industry technology, enhancing their learning and creative capabilities.”
The project was completed in line with the university’s deadline, with installation finalised in February 2025, ensuring students and faculty have uninterrupted access to advanced media storage and workflow solutions from the start of the new academic term.
